Fomalhaut and winter forest

Fomalhaut is the Guardian of the Winter Solstice, and it is his task to make sure the days start getting longer again after each Winter Solstice.

Unfortunately we have not seen any sun for weeks (because it has been cloudy all the time), so Fomalhaut has found it hard to check the height of the sun and the exact length of the day. Today he wanted to go out, but could not measure his shadow as it is still overcast.

Fomalhaut: It looks lighter because of the snow, but the sun is hidden behind the clouds.

Fomalhaut: Hello everybody!

Fomalhaut: Here is a nice small snow covered spruce. It could serve as a Christmas tree.

Fomalhaut: And I could serve as an ornament. Do I look very ornamental?

Fomalhaut: Haitula gave me a task to check if the swamp is frozen. Swamps must be frozen in the winter to keep the swamp monsters at bay. This looks solid enough - at least for a small demon like me. I hope there are no big swamp monsters hiding under the ice...

Fomalhaut: This is not a swamp. It has rained so much this year that all the depressions are filled with water - and now frozen.

Nibble nibble

Egghead: So you guys know where there is something good to eat?

nibble, nibble...

Deimos: What is this? I told you no nibbling before Christmas!

Deimos: Shoo!

Deimos: Scram!

Deimos: Shoo!

Eggie: I'm going, don't have a cow!

Deimos: It does look awfully tempting...

nibble nibble...

Gingerbread house

The gingerbread house is ready. My crew proudly presents it:

Fomalhaut: Here is our finished house...

Naks: See, the door is open to invite you in. Unfortunately it is a bit too small for me. And I can't find any mushrooms that would make me grow or shrink because it's already too cold outside.

Naks: Here's the tree and the glass window at the end...

Deimos: But what is this??? Zumikloxians nibbling at the corners!

Deimos: Shoo! You are not supposed to nibble at the house until after Christmas!

Deimos: And that means you, too!

Fomalhaut: I was just checking if the house is well built...

I sure hope my crew won't nibble at the house very much before Christmas... Maybe they will be watching each other...

Gingerbread house update

Today my little helpers decorated the gingerbread house parts.

Niks: Look! Everything has been decorated!

Naks: They must dry well before we try to glue them together. They look very nice, I say!

Niks: We used silver balls and pieces of marmalade as decorations. We also added a little Christmas tree outside the house.

Naks: Here's one end wall, it has a marmalade glass window.

Niks: And the roof is tiled with marmalade hearts.

Naks: As there was plenty of icing left over, we also decorated the small gingerbread figures.

If you think the house looks overdone, the decorations are done according to Niks's and Naks's taste. Deimos and Fomalhaut were basically busy licking everything that fell on the table and eating the strips of marmalade that were left over when the candies were cut to suitable shapes.

Christmas preparations

Today is Finland's Independence Day which normally means a day off from work. We usually take advantage of that to bake a huge batch of gingerbread cookies for Christmas. Unfortunately this year the 6th of December is Saturday, so we get no extra day off from work, but we baked the cookies anyway.

The little companions were not allowed to come along to participate (I was afraid they would make a huge mess), but they could enjoy the results afterwards.

Niks: Look! we got a batch of small gingerbread cookies just for us.

Naks: They sure smell good!

Deimos: They taste good too.

Fomalhaut: Mumble gumble mgbmh...

(It seems that Fomalhaut has his mouth full of gingerbread.)

The little ones got something else, too:

Niks: Look! Building blocks for a gingerbread house!!!!

Naks: These must be decorated before they are put together...

Deimos: We'll do the decorating tomorrow...

Fomalhaut: Mumble gumble mgbmh...

(It seems that Fomalhaut still has his mouth full of gingerbread.)
